Pied-à-Terre

Paris, France

This tiny apartment in a charming old building in the heart of Paris was once the maid’s quarters, a long time ago. It had its own set of challenges not just due to its size but also with how the flow of the apartment worked.  The apartment was in ok condition when my clients moved in. But, after a few years, they decided to update the kitchen. The kitchen used to be separated from the living room. Two very small spaces which made maneuvering around the apartment difficult if there was more than one person in it. We decided to take down the wall and completely change the layout of the kitchen so it would be more functional and also give more storage space. We also added a dishwasher and a washing machine both of which were high priority items for my clients.

In renovating the apartment, we wanted to keep the old charm of the building but also make it more modern and functional.  The old wooden floors were kept and we had the new kitchen wood floors match the floors that were already in the living room. We added some much needed light. There was no overhead lighting before in the apartment. We kept the kitchen simple and clean and matched the cabinetry to the doors so that everything would appear seamless. Because it’s such a small apartment, we kept the pop of color to the red couch and rug and the rest was kept very neutral.  We wanted to create a space that was welcoming and easy to relax in.
